History

ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington women’s tennis welcomed the North Texas Mean Green to the UTA Tennis Center looking to get back in the win column. Despite several hard-fought efforts in singles play, the Mavericks dropped the bout 4-0.

UTA (2-6) had a strong start in doubles play, keeping it close across all three courts. UNT (5-4), however, eventually pulled ahead, first winning on Court 2 before taking Court 1 shortly after. UTA’s Court 3 team of Natalia Gonzalez and Sofia Selle had built a 5-2 lead before their match was left unfinished.

In singles play, UNT picked up quick wins on Court 6 and Court 2 to go ahead 3-0, but the Mavericks fought hard on the remaining four courts. Gonzalez won a marathon first set over the Mean Green’s Marina Adati on Court 5. Gonzalez led Adati 3-2 in the second set before the match was left unfinished.

Flora Farkaslaki had a strong showing of her own on Court 4. The freshman won a tough back-and-forth first set 6-4 against UNT’s Pia Petelinsek. Petelinsek got the victory in set two, and the match was left unfinished in the decisive third set with the Mean Green freshman ahead 1-0.

On Court 3, Sofia Selle and UNT’s Lilly Schultz needed a tiebreaker to decide their first set, Schultz outlasting Selle 7-5 in tiebreakers to win the set 7-6. The match was left unfinished in the second set.

The match came to an end on Court 1 when the Mean Green’s Carolina Laydner knocked off Elizaveta Mladentseva 6-4 in a hard-fought second set. 

UTA will have a week to regroup before hosting Lafayette at 10 a.m. Feb 26 at the UTA Tennis Center.
