Sachse City Council, addressing rising costs of a long-running street improvement project, on Monday approved a budget amendment that projects a $7 million increase in the project.
At issue is work known as the Merritt Road Project, which is being done in conjunction with the Texas Department of Transportation. The cost of the project started at $15.6 million but escalated to $34.7 million since the initial project was approved in October 2021.
Council voted unanimously Monday for a second budget amendment that would add another $7 million to the project. City Manager Gina Nash told council members the money won’t be spent until after the bids are let for the work, which she estimates will occur within the next couple of years.
The project calls for a widening of a two-lane roadway to a four-lane “divided urban roadway” along Merritt Road and Woodbridge Parkway. The work will extend from south of Creek Crossing Lane to Pleasant Valley Road.
