KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The UT Tyler baseball program moved to 11-2 on the season Saturday afternoon after splitting a doubleheader with Texas A&M-Kingsville. The Patriots were shut out 2-0 in game one before responding with a gritty 5-4 extra-inning victory in game two to salvage the split.
GAME ONE
The Patriots were held scoreless for the first time this season in a 2-0 loss to the Javelinas. Offense was limited on both sides early, as neither team generated much traffic through the first five innings.
UT Tyler threatened in the sixth after loading the bases with a walk and two hit-by-pitches, but a flyout ended the inning and kept the game scoreless. In the bottom half, Kingsville capitalized. Back-to-back singles and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases before a sacrifice fly brought in the first run. The second run scored during a rundown following a stolen home attempt, giving the Javelinas all the offense they would need.
The Patriots mounted one final threat in the seventh, loading the bases with no outs after a walk, an error, and a hit-by-pitch. However, three straight outs ended the game and snapped UT Tyler’s win streak.
Connor Clark, Ben Lea, and Luke Smith each recorded a single, accounting for the Patriots’ three hits. Julio Garcia went the distance on the mound, tossing six innings while allowing two runs on five hits.
GAME TWO
Game two featured more offense and late drama as the Patriots earned a 5-4 win in eight innings despite being outhit 11-6.
UT Tyler struck first with its most productive inning of the day in the second. Kaston Mason led off with a single and later scored after three consecutive one-out walks. Luke Smith followed with an RBI single, and Clark added an infield single to give the Patriots a 3-0 lead.
Kingsville answered in the fourth, using three straight one-out singles to load the bases before a sacrifice fly and another RBI single trimmed the lead to 3-2. The Patriots responded in the fifth when Travis Bragg delivered an RBI single to right field after a walk and hit-by-pitch put runners on base, pushing the advantage to 4-2.
The lead was short-lived. The Javelinas tied the game in the bottom of the fifth with two runs on three hits, capitalizing on a two-out walk and an infield single to make it 4-4. Neither team broke through again until extra innings.
In the eighth, UT Tyler loaded the bases with a single, a walk, and an intentional walk. Drew Schmidt worked a full-count walk to force in the go-ahead run and give the Patriots a 5-4 edge. From there, the bullpen sealed it.
Garrett Landry was dominant in relief, entering in the fifth inning and shutting down the Javelinas the rest of the way. He tossed 3.2 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while striking out six to earn the win.
Five Patriots recorded a hit in game two. Bragg posted the lone multi-hit performance of the doubleheader, going 2-for-2 with a stolen base, while Mason scored twice.
UT Tyler returns to action Sunday at 1 p.m. as they look to secure their fourth straight series win to open the season.
