A large fire at an Arlington apartment complex Monday afternoon quickly spread, displacing more than 20 people, Arlington firefighters said.

Clouds of smoke were seen coming from the complex in the 4900 block of Sigmond Drive around 1:34 p.m. as the first firefighters arrived, Arlington Fire Department said in a news release.

A second alarm was requested by firefighters as they saw fire spreading throughout the first and second floors of the building. As crews worked to extinguish the fire, they also searched the complex for anyone trapped inside, the release said.

Fire officials upgraded the call to a three-alarm fire as flames reached the roof. The fire was declared out about 20 minutes after the first crew arrived, according to the release.
