EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The 2028 Libertarian National Convention will be held in El Paso, the County Libertarian Party said.
Delegates, candidates and party leaders from all 50 states will gather in El Paso for the party’s presidential nominating process.
“Hosting the 2028 convention will once again bring national attention to El Paso, offering the
country a chance to see what our residents already know: El Paso is a beautiful, safe, and proudly
multicultural border city. Thousands of visitors will have the opportunity to experience our unique identity and the welcoming spirit that defines our community,” the El Paso County Libertarian Party said.
David Marino, County chairman for the Libertarian Party, said that with the border being such a big part of the news, it was natural for the Libertarian National Convention to come to El Paso.
Marino said the leaders of the national party wanted to make a statement by bringing Libertarians to the border.
“We will have delegates from all 50 states,” Marino said. “They will get to see what the border is really like, instead of what they see on the news.”
Marino said that “people have this idea that El Paso is one of the most dangerous cities in the country.”
“Actually, El Paso is one of the safest cities in the country,” Marino said.
“Two thousand Libertarians will be coming to El Paso,” Marino said. “They will be spending money at restaurants, bars and other places.”
That could mean hundreds of thousands of dollars of economic impact, if not a million dollars, Marino said.
The convention will also be open to the public and El Pasoans will be able to come and check out the proceedings.
Marino credited the work of Destination El Paso and Josie Barajas in particular with being instrumental in getting the national party to bring the convention to El Paso.
