NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas — Drivers who rely on Northeast Loop 820 in North Richland Hills should plan for another round of overnight shutdowns this week, as crews continue major construction in a corridor that has seen repeated lane and ramp impacts in recent months.
TxDOT is closing all lanes in both directions of North Loop 820 between Beach Street and Rufe Snow Drive nightly from 7:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. through Thursday, Feb. 26.
Closures then extend later into the morning on Friday, Feb. 27 and Saturday, Feb. 28, running from 7:30 p.m. until 10 a.m. the next day. During the closure windows, drivers will be directed into the TEXpress Lanes at no cost.
For people who drive this stretch regularly, the frequent closures are tied to the long running rebuild and expansion of the Northeast Loop 820 corridor. North Richland Hills officials describe the work as a reconstruction and widening of NE Loop 820 through the city, aimed at improving mobility and access along the corridor.

Zooming out, TxDOT has studied improvements for I-820 in the Northeast Loop segment that include expanding general purpose lanes and TEXpress Lanes to meet future traffic demand. Projects along this broader I-820 and State Highway 121/183 system have involved rebuilding and expanding main lanes and adding managed lanes as part of the North Tarrant Express network. That scale of work is why closures can come in waves, especially overnight, when crews have room to shift traffic, set barriers, move equipment, and complete work that cannot safely happen next to live lanes.
This is a major reconstruction project, so the work has to be done in stages. Closing the road overnight gives crews the space to safely adjust lanes and move barriers without traffic right beside them.
What drivers should expect during the closures
When the main lanes shut down between Beach Street and Rufe Snow Drive, the detour plan is straightforward: traffic is pushed into the TEXpress Lanes, and the toll is waived during the closure windows. Even with the free detour, expect slower speeds and backups approaching the closure points because everyone is funneled into fewer lanes.
As always with construction, schedules can change. TxDOT notes that closures are subject to changes due to weather and work conditions, which is worth remembering if you are making early morning plans on Feb. 28 or March 1 after the overnight windows.
Planning tips for the weekend overnight to morning closures
The extended windows on Friday night and Saturday night are the ones that tend to surprise drivers because they run past sunrise and into mid morning. If you have a morning shift, a flight, youth sports, or weekend plans that put you on 820 early, build in extra time and consider an alternate route before you reach the Beach Street and Rufe Snow area.
If you do stay on 820, follow posted signs and watch for quick lane changes near the TEXpress entrances and exits. That is where the “accordion effect” usually pops up, even when volumes are lighter than a weekday rush.
Drivers can also expect more intermittent impacts in this part of Tarrant County as the corridor rebuild continues. The Northeast Loop 820 work has been an active construction zone for a long time, and the end goal is a more modern layout with improved capacity and smoother traffic flow once the heavy construction phase is complete.
