El Paso, TX (KFOX14/CBS4) — A spotted, 8-week-old cattle dog mix named Java is up for adoption at the El Paso Humane Society, and staff members say he’s the kind of puppy who “just wants to be friends with everyone.”

Java was featured during a segment highlighting adoptable pets and ways the public can support the shelter. A representative from the El Paso Humane Society said Java is “super, super sweet,” adding that “his little tail is just going.”

The representative said cattle dog mixes are typically medium-sized dogs. “I actually have one personally,” the representative said, describing the dog as “45” pounds and noting that even that dog is “on the taller side.”

The El Paso Humane Society is also encouraging people to consider volunteering. The shelter said the first step is to visit its website, “El Paso dot org,” where people can find the full setup and steps to get started.

“Pretty much everyone is eligible,” the representative said. Kids “over 13 years and up are also eligible with a parent,” the shelter said. People “16 years old and older can just come in,” get an orientation, and then “kind of just make your own schedule.”

Volunteer opportunities vary based on comfort level and interest, the representative said. Those who aren’t comfortable working directly with animals can help in areas such as the laundry room or with the medical team. Others can help with daily animal care tasks such as “beds and walks.”

The shelter also works with students who need to complete volunteer-hour requirements. “We get in a lot of high schoolers, too. That’s most of our volunteers,” the representative said.

In addition to volunteering, the representative said fostering is another way people often support the shelter.
