When the Dallas Cowboys slid All-Pro offensive lineman Tyler Smith from his usual left guard spot to left tackle at the end of last year, it raised eyebrows.

While the move was initially the product of injuries to Tyler Guyton and Nate Thomas, Smith played the final three games of the season at tackle and later met with Brian Schottenheimer seeking clarity on his positional future.

Cowboys offensive coordinator Klayton Adams discussed Smith’s situation on a Wednesday appearance on Shan and RJ on 105. 3 The Fan.

“i don’t know exactly what the answer is for the future,” Adams said. “I know this, when we have those three inside guys (Smith, center Cooper Beebe and right guard Tyler Booker) playing together, it’s one of our greatest strengths. So, do we want to soften one of the things we’re really good at to try to make up at another position? I think, in an ideal world, no.”

Schottenheimer said in January that Smith would remain the team’s starting left guard for 2026, but that injuries or ineffective play could force the All-Pro back to the outside.

“At the end of the day, we’re going to do what’s best for the Dallas Cowboys (in) winning a Super Bowl and that’s just like we did the last three games. If we got to move (Smith) to tackle we will and what I love about Tyler we were able to have that conversation and he said it makes perfect sense and I understand,” Schottenheimer said last month.

Adams added that he’s looking for more availability from the players manning the tackle positions.

“I think going into this offseason, in my mind, the way that I see it is how do we get more consistent play out of the tackles? Well, we need to get those guys on the field and they need to play. That’s one of the things that I know that Tyler Guyton’s been frustrated with.”
