El Pasoans are opening their gas bills this month and doing a double take.

According to a new report from KFOX-TV (KFOX14), residents across the city say their latest statements from Texas Gas Service are dramatically higher than what they have been paying, in some cases nearly double.

Bills Nearly Double for Some Residents

Multiple customers told KFOX14 they were caught off guard and said they never received notice of a major increase. After digging into their itemized bills, some noticed specific line items that appeared to spike sharply.

Karla Urias Couder told the station that her delivery charge jumped from just a few dollars to $28, while the customer charge rose to $35. Her overall bill climbed from the typical $50 to $60 range to $132.

Other residents reported similar jumps. One woman said her bill went from as low as $20 or $30 to more than $180. Another said she normally pays around $80 per month but was hit with a $200 statement.

Winter Usage or Something More

Many customers said when they called to question the increase, they were told it was due to higher winter usage. But several said that explanation did not add up, especially when the total more than doubled despite similar consumption habits.

Texas Gas Service told KFOX14 the higher bills are tied to increased winter usage, rising natural gas costs, and a recent rate design update. The company also stated the spike does not appear to be connected to the previously reported electric rate increase approved for El Paso Electric customers.

What Customers Can Do

The utility is encouraging customers to call about payment plans or assistance programs if they are struggling.

For many families already stretching every dollar, these unexpected jumps are hitting hard. As Couder told KFOX14, people are pinching pennies, and higher utility costs are adding pressure to already tight household budgets.

If your bill looks off, it may be worth reviewing the breakdown line by line and contacting the company directly to ask questions.
