HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — The State Board of Education approved more than 4,200 corrections and updates to the state Bluebonnet curriculum in a 9-to-6 vote on Wednesday.
It’s a number one board member called egregious on Wednesday.
“My concern is that we have failed students this school year who have been utilizing this product,” one board member said.
Fact errors, punctuation mistakes, and copyright updates were the problems the board highlighted. Wednesday evening, the state board of education approved making the wide-ranging fixes.
“I am very concerned, as a board, we have set a president for sloppy publishing, and many times, even if it is a typo, it can become an error of fact,” a second board member said.
The curriculum first fell under public scrutiny during its 2024 development, when critics voiced concern that the content was too Bible-focused. The overall content, and not just the errors, were once again center stage this week.
“I am concerned about the number of inaccuracies in the material as we see them in the book so far, it seems so much of this was just designed to be propaganda,” another board member said.
Ultimately, the board voted 9-to-6 to move forward with making more than 4,000 updates. Now, the state will have to correct digital content in the next 30 days. Physical material must be fixed before the next publishing cycle, ahead of the 2026-27 school year.
Funded through tax dollars, several board members wondered how much these mistakes would cost Texans.
“I think they are waiting for this vote to go run the math on that; if this were any other publisher, it would be at the publisher’s expense rather to update the components that need to be replaced for corrections,” Colin Dempsey, the TEA member overseeing the review, said.
Humble ISD previously said it uses Bluebonnet. ABC13 asked if they would pull the incorrect material for the time being, but did not hear back. HISD and Katy ISD confirmed they do not use Bluebonnet in their schools.
