Nueces County is investing more than $1 million into Parker Pool in Flour Bluff, with pump upgrades and kitchen renovations expected to be finished by May.
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Flour Bluff’s Parker Pool is ready to be one of the coolest places to beat the South Texas heat this summer.
For years the county has been running this neighborhood pool and now officials are investing more money into upgrades to make it one of the best pools in the city.
When temperatures climb, this is where Bluff residents head to cool off.
Parker Pool has long been a summertime favorite with families and kids splashing and playing in the water. But a few years ago the facility’s future was uncertain.
Flo East with the Coastal Bend Friends of Aquatics said the City once considered closing the pool before the community stepped in to save it.
Flo East, Coastal Bend Friends of Aquatics:
“At the time the City wanted to close our pool. They were going to fill it in and the business association decided some of us got together and said no you are not going to do that.”
Now the pool is not only open but getting major improvements, including upgraded pump equipment already in place and more work underway ahead of the summer season.
Flo East, Coastal Bend Friends of Aquatics:
“We did some upgrades to the pool so now we are going to start in our kitchen and it will be completely reconstructed. New countertops new cabinets make it more functional.”
Nueces County Commissioner Brent Chesney said the improvements reflect significant investment in the community by the county which took over the facility.
Commissioner Brent Chesney, Nueces County:
“That project will take it well over 1 million in improvements that Nueces County has invested in that pool.”
County officials say the investment shows how important Parker Pool is to families in the Bluff and the surrounding area. Renovations are expected to be finished by the end of May just as summer temperatures begin to rise.
A brand new subdivision across the street from the pool is also expected to bring more families to the area.
Flo East, Coastal Bend Friends of Aquatics:
“We are definitely prepared and we are so excited. This is a DR Horton subdivision and it will bring in a lot of kiddos and just encourage more people to come over and enjoy the park and the pool.”
With more swimmers and more families expected this summer, supporters say Parker Pool will be one of the hottest places in Flour Bluff to spend a hot South Texas summer day.
