EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — After people reported “ridiculously expensive” gas bills, the City of El Paso said it is challenging the state-approved rate increase.

According to the City of El Paso, it is filing a motion with the Railroad Commission of Texas for a rehearing, looking to challenge Texas Gas Service’s recent rate hike.

In a press release, the City stressed that it does not control gas utility rates, nor does it have the authority to lower people’s bills– again, those are set by the Texas Gas Service and approved by the Railroad Commission.

However, the City said that it has heard the complaints and reports and wants to make sure rates are fair for El Pasoans.

“We share the concerns we are hearing from residents about rising bills, “said Mayor Renard U. Johnson in a written statement. “The City has opposed this increase from the beginning and is using every available legal avenue to advocate for El Paso customers.”

As it has been reported, people have pointed out that the “delivery charge” and “cost of gas” fees have doubled or tripled on their most recent bill.

The City is also encouraging people to reach out to the Railroad Commission to voice their concerns and the Texas Gas Service if they have questions about their bills.
