In Arlington, balloons and a chorus of “Happy Birthday” marked what family members said should have been 15-year-old Riley Jordan’s birthday celebration.

Instead, loved ones gathered Friday at Veterans Park to honor his life.

“Riley was an incredible young man. He impacted so many of our lives. It’s evident because so many of you are here,” said Pastor Tanner Brack.

Arlington police said Jordan died Friday, Feb. 20, 2026, when friends were playing with a gun in a bedroom.

One teen was arrested and charged with manslaughter.

Jordan’s family asked that the focus remain on his life.

“He was a guy that had a constant smile on his face, that he brought joy wherever he was, that he was the guy who brought the mood up with people around him,” Brack said.

Many at the vigil wore blue, Jordan’s favorite color. Some wore shirts reading “Live like Riley.”

As balloons were released and candles lit, loved ones bowed their heads in prayer and were encouraged to lean on one another as they moved forward.

In the wake of the shooting, Arlington Martin High School shared a letter with parents:

“I am devastated to share that one of our students died this weekend. Our hearts are with the student’s family and loved ones, and with every student and staff member who is hurting today.
Arlington Police are actively investigating what happened. Because this is an ongoing investigation, we must be careful not to share details that could compromise the investigation or violate student privacy. This tragedy happened at a private residence, not on school grounds, and not during the school day.
Our immediate focus is supporting our students and staff. Beginning Monday, grief counselors and additional support staff will be available at Martin. Students may ask to see a counselor at any time, and we will make sure they are supported.

Please check in with your child. Many students will experience grief. Common grief reactions include shock, sadness, anger, fear, trouble concentrating, or changes in sleep and appetite. If your child is struggling, we encourage you to reach out to our counseling team at https://www.aisd.net/martin-high-school/staff/
We also ask our community to avoid spreading rumors or unverified information on social media. In situations like this, speculation can cause additional harm to those who are grieving and can interfere with the investigation.

Please keep the entire Martin family in your thoughts during this time. Thank you for supporting one another with compassion and care as we navigate this tragedy together.”
