West Texas Robotics Championship draws 48 teams to Texas Tech

  • March 1, 2026

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Forty-eight teams from Amarillo, Lubbock, Midland, El Paso and the New Mexico area competed Saturday in the West Texas Robotics Championship, hosted by Texas Tech Whitacre College of Engineering.

Middle school and high school students were asked to design, build, program and present a robot to compete in a game that changes every year, presenting new challenges for participants to solve.

Fisher White, a student competing in the regional championship, said this year’s robot task involved shooting balls into a goal, either autonomously or by human control.

“The goal is to shoot these balls into a goal quickly and accurately, compelled by itself or humanly driven,” White said.

White said he wants others to see robotics as an accessible activity.

“Just give it a chance, I have so many friends who think robotics is nerdy or something like that…you can do anything, you can do social media for it, you can do anything and find your place in robotics,” White said.

Teams competed for a chance to represent their schools at the UIL, state and world championships.
