ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – Acting Texas Comptroller Kelly Hancock toured Texas State Technical College’s Abilene campus Thursday to highlight the state’s Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) initiative, which aims to give parents more options in their children’s education.

During the visit, Hancock explored several hands-on training areas, including HVAC and plumbing labs. He met with students and instructors, gaining insight into the practical skills programs that prepare graduates for in-demand technical careers.
Can Proposition 1 power the Big Country’s next wave of job growth?
Hancock stressed that the TEFA program is designed to expand educational opportunities, allowing families to choose paths that align with their children’s interests and career goals. As the program’s overseeing authority, the Comptroller’s Office will ensure it supports students and families statewide.
“Really does open up those educational freedoms, creates a little competition which helps everybody improve. That’s really what we’re looking for, is overall improvement in the education, quality of education across the state of Texas,” Hancock said.
Hancock has also visited other TSTC campuses, highlighting the benefits of TEFA and engaging with students in hands-on learning programs as part of Hancock’s broader outreach across the state.
