As many as 20 people were shot, and multiple people were killed, in a mass shooting early Sunday in downtown Austin near West Sixth Street and Nueces Street, officials confirmed to the American-Statesman.

As of 3:30 a.m., officials were trying to determine the seriousness of the victims’ injuries, but preliminary information indicated that at least 17 people were taken to hospitals.

Austin police confirmed that the suspect was shot by an Austin police officer, and that the scene no longer poses an immediate threat to the public.
