TCU men’s basketball landed its second commitment of the week Friday night with the addition of Ryan Hunt.
A junior college center at Eastern Arizona College, Hunt announced his commitment to the Horned Frogs on social media. Hunt is listed at 7 feet and is currently averaging 14.9 points, 12.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game in his second season at Eastern Arizona.
Originally from Perth, Australia, Hunt took his official visit to Fort Worth last weekend and was present during the TCU women’s basketball comeback win vs. Iowa State.
Hunt is the second JUCO prospect TCU has landed, with the Horned Frogs having a commitment from the No. 1-ranked JUCO player, Trent Lincoln.
The Horned Frogs landed 19-year-old Serbian forward Milos Sojic earlier in the week. With the addition of Hunt, it’s clear that TCU head coach Jamie Dixon is prioritizing age and experience this cycle, with no high school recruits currently in the class.
This follows a similar approach to last season, when TCU only signed Kayden “Bugg” Edwards out of high school, and he was a local standout at Duncanville.
Dixon’s philosophy fits with the growing shift in college basketball, with more teams wanting to get older as they focus on the transfer portal. The Horned Frogs’ success with Xavier Edmonds also likely affected TCU’s approach on the recruiting trail.
Edmonds was the top-ranked JUCO player last cycle at Salt Lake Community College and while he was initially expected to be a depth piece for TCU, Edmonds has become a breakout star in the Big 12 after the injury to Malick Diallo pushed him into the starting lineup.
TCU will hope that Hunt and Lincoln can make a similar instant impact next season. Sojic may not be a JUCO prospect, but he’ll be at least a year older than the typical freshman when he gets on campus and brings professional experience from his team with KK Beko Belgrade.
It’s a different approach by Dixon this cycle, but it’s just one example of how teams are adjusting their roster-building philosophy in the NIL and revenue-sharing era of college sports.
