Plano police are investigating a crash that left a 15-year-old boy dead and closed all northbound lanes of Independence Parkway Monday afternoon, according to a statement.

Officers and Plano fire officials responded to reports of a traffic crash around 12 p.m. in the northbound lanes of the 600 block of Independence Parkway.

Investigators determined a blue Chevrolet Volt was traveling south on Independence Parkway when the driver lost control of the vehicle, crossed the center median and struck a white Lincoln Navigator.

Four people were inside the Navigator, including three passengers and the driver, according to the statement. One of the passengers, an unidentified 15-year-old boy, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The other three individuals were transported to the hospital in unknown conditions, the statement said.

The Volt’s driver, who remains unidentified, was not hospitalized, according to investigators.

Police said speed appears to be a contributing factor in the crash though they did not immediately say if they planned to pursue criminal charges.

As of 1:00 p.m., all northbound lanes in the 600 block of Independence Parkway, south of West Plano Parkway, remained closed. Authorities did not provide a time estimate of when the lanes would reopen.

At least one southbound lane of traffic remained open during the investigation.

This incident will be investigated by the Plano police traffic unit.

No further information was immediately available.
