A 28-year-old father of six is dead after a police pursuit late Monday night, and his family is demanding answers.
His cousin, Asia Taylor, identified the man who died as Kendrick Gibson.
“To me, he was a fun cousin, a family guy… he loved his kids,” said Taylor.
Family members told WFAA he had just left his grandmother’s Fort Worth home when police attempted to pull him over. Not long after, relatives were called to the scene of a crash following a pursuit.
“I’m really at a loss for words because I’m really upset,” said his grandmother, Debbie Gibson, speaking at the scene.
Fort Worth police said officers tried to stop Gibson’s vehicle because they believed it was involved in an aggravated kidnapping. According to police, Gibson drove north on Interstate 35W, prompting a pursuit.
“The suspect vehicle took the Pharr Street exit, lost control and crashed into a concrete pillar underneath the overpass,” said Tracy Carter, a public information officer with the Fort Worth Police Department.
Gibson died at the scene. Police said he was the only person in the vehicle. Family members questioned the circumstances surrounding the alleged kidnapping, saying they do not believe Gibson was involved.
“If this were an alleged kidnapping, where is the victim in this?” Taylor said. “I don’t feel like they were very forthcoming with what actually transpired.”
Juanita Moreno, the mother of Gibson’s children, said she was on the phone with him as police tried to pull him over. She said she heard him repeatedly ask the police why he was being stopped.
“I can hear it in his voice; he was uncomfortable. He was scared,” Moreno said. “The next thing you know, we just hear a loud bang, like if somebody t-boned him.”
WFAA reached out to Fort Worth police for additional details on Tuesday. A spokesperson said the investigation remains underway, adding, “We will release more information once we are able to do so.”
“We’re demanding full transparency. I want to see the dashcam footage,” Taylor said.
The same night, police said a separate pursuit also turned deadly when an alleged hit-and-run driver lost control and struck a tree off Camp Bowie Boulevard.
For Gibson’s family, the loss is overwhelming.
“He was loved, and this is not going to be something we’re going to be quiet about and forget about. He mattered,” Taylor said.
As the investigation continues, his family says they are waiting for answers.
