HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A brief police chase in Greenway Plaza ended Tuesday afternoon with two suspected car burglars crashing their vehicle and being taken into custody, according to the Houston Police Department.
The arrests come just a week after HPD officers captured four other alleged car burglars near NRG Stadium during the first weekend of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
Police said both cases are the result of proactive patrols targeting areas known for vehicle break-ins, especially during major events that draw large crowds.
Investigators said that officers with the department’s Central Crime Suppression Unit spotted two suspects allegedly breaking into vehicles in the Greenway Plaza area.
When officers attempted to intervene, the suspects fled, leading police on a brief chase that ended in a crash. Both were arrested and are now being processed into jail.
In a separate case tied to Rodeo festivities, four suspects – Shaquiria DeBose, Chris Baker, Joseph Thompson, and Donte Crawford – recently appeared in court on charges connected to vehicle burglaries near NRG Stadium.
Prosecutors said the group was seen acting suspiciously in a parking lot on Odom Boulevard during the first night of Rodeo cook-off events. When officers approached, all four allegedly ran but were quickly apprehended. In court, a prosecutor said the defendants are accused of helping break into as many as 12 vehicles that night.
Among the items allegedly stolen were firearms and a gun belt. Police said that guns are frequently targeted in vehicle burglaries, making it especially dangerous when firearms are left inside cars.
According to Houston police data, there were 24,011 vehicle break-ins in 2025, a slight decrease from 26,657 in 2024.
In the 77054 ZIP code, which includes the NRG area, there were 377 car thefts in 2025, compared to 427 in 2024.
With thousands attending Rodeo events and other large gatherings, officers stress a simple but critical reminder: Do not leave valuables inside your vehicle. Authorities say many of these crimes are crimes of opportunity – and removing visible valuables can significantly reduce the risk of becoming a victim.
