EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — Like something out of a Grand Theft Auto video game, police said they arrested a man who allegedly stole a car and tried to run over a mother and her child sitting in a park in Far East El Paso.

According to the El Paso Police Department, 28-year-old Robert Caleb Colmenero was arrested on Sunday afternoon after officers found him walking his dog in the parking lot of 1840 Lee Trevino Dr. in East El Paso after he was identified as the suspect of a hit-and-run where a stolen vehicle was driven through Burning Mesquite Park trying to run over a 34-year-old mother and her 6-year-old child.

Police said the woman got the child out of the way, but was hit and suffered minor injuries.

Police said the stolen vehicle then continued driving through the park lawn and crashed into a canopy structure where more people were, before fleeing the scene.

According to EPPD, the vehicle used in the hit-and-run had been reported stolen and the suspect was described as a man walking a dog.

Eventually, the suspect Colmenero was spotted at the parking lot and was arrested and animal services were called to check on the welfare of the dog.

According to jail records, Colmenero was booked into the El Paso County Jail and charged with:

Two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weaponInjury Child/Elderly/Disable/w/Int Bodily InjuryCriminal Mischief {>}=$750{<}$2500

Jail records also show that the total bond for all the charges amounts to $460,000.

As of Tuesday afternoon, jail records display Colmenero remains in jail.

On their social media accounts, EPPD shared bodycam video showing the aftermath of the hit-and-run and the arrest of Colemenero.
