Newly renovated fields will welcome players and families for opening day on March 21.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Families in Northwest Nueces County held a ribbon cutting Wednesday to celebrate renovated Oil Belt Little League and Little Miss Kickball fields ahead of the March 21 opener.

Nueces County Precinct 1 Commissioner Mike Pusley said the improvements were long overdue.

“All of the concession stands out here were very old, especially the one on the main baseball field — it’s been here over 50 years,” Pusley said. “They were in very bad condition, so we tore all the old stands down and built new concession stands and new restroom facilities — all ADA accessible,” he said.

League leaders say the timing could not be better. Oil Belt Little League President Jason Cook said more than 650 children are registered for baseball and softball this season.

“It’s perfect timing. It’s been almost two years since we’ve been out here, and everybody’s looking forward to getting back,” Cook said.

The complex serves more than 800 children each year across baseball, softball, and kickball programs.

While the new buildings are complete, Cook said crews are still working to get the grass and playing surfaces ready before the first pitch.

Registration has already closed, and any new sign-ups would be placed on a waitlist if roster spots become available. The league offers divisions for children ages 3 to 16.

Pusley credited former Nueces County Judge Barbara Canales for launching the project before he joined the Commissioners Court, adding that they worked together to bring it to completion.
