Sugar Land officials approved a new incentive program designed to help startups stay and grow in the city.

SUGAR LAND, Texas — Sugar Land is introducing a new carrot to keep its startups at home — and to lure new ones — in the age of remote work and corporate relocations.

The Sugar Land Development Corp. approved a resolution on March 3 adopting a new set of financial incentives tailored to startups through the Sugar Land Starts Up Innovation Fund Program.

The proposal was presented by Colby Millenbruch, a business recruitment manager for the city. Millenbruch highlighted previous moves by Sugar Land under its strategic plan, like attracting the incubator Plug and Play to Sugar Land Town Square, but also touched on the root issue facing innovation in the city.

“Plug and Play brings more than 20 startups to the city each year,” he said in prepared remarks. “But again, just like the 30-plus startups that are currently in Sugar Land, we’ve had no way to support them or incentivize them to stay in Sugar Land. Our current incentives are geared towards established companies with many more employees and much more revenue.”
