AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin Police Department (APD) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred early Sunday morning at a downtown bar, resulting in multiple casualties.
The incident took place on March 1, 2026, at 1:58 a.m. at Buford’s, located at 700 West 6th Street, according to a press release from the APD. Officers responded to multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting a shooting and arrived on the scene within 57 seconds, alongside Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services and Austin Fire Department, to find multiple victims with gunshot wounds.
Preliminary investigations revealed that a black Cadillac SUV approached the bar, and the driver began firing into a crowd. The vehicle then parked near the intersection of West 6th and Wood streets. The suspect, identified as 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne, exited the vehicle with a rifle and fired at a pedestrian before being confronted by officers. Diagne was shot by officers after discharging his firearm in their direction and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The shooting resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including Diagne. The other two victims were identified as 21-year-old Savitha Shan and 19-year-old Ryder Harrington. Additionally, 16 people were treated for gunshot wounds at local hospitals, with one victim, 30-year-old Jorge Pederson, later succumbing to his injuries.
The APD, in collaboration with the Austin Police Oversight and the City of Austin, has released audio and video materials related to the incident, which are available on the department’s YouTube and social media platforms. The materials include body-worn camera footage, HALO surveillance video, and 9-1-1 audio, though some content has been redacted to comply with state law and maintain the integrity of the investigation.
The Federal Bureau of Investigations is also involved, investigating the incident as a potential act of terrorism. The names of the officers involved have not been released, and they have been placed on administrative leave per APD protocol.
