A driver who led officers on a high-speed chase Monday night was killed when the suspect’s vehicle crashed near downtown Fort Worth, police said.

Shortly after 6:30 p.m., officers attempted to stop a car they believed was involved in an aggravated kidnapping. The driver refused to comply, according to police. Officers pursued the vehicle as it headed north on Interstate 35W.

The suspect lost control after taking the Pharr Street exit. The car slammed into a concrete pillar under the overpass, police said, and the driver died at the scene.

There were no other occupants in the car, and no injuries reported to officers or civilians. Police didn’t say why they believed the vehicle was involved in a kidnapping. The Traffic Investigation Unit and Major Case Unit are investigating the circumstances that led up to the chase, and more information will be released as it becomes available.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office will publicly identify the person who died.

The crash was the second incident on Monday in which a suspect died while fleeing from officers, police said. A suspected hit-and-run driver was killed after hitting a tree on Camp Bowie Boulevard.
