Rice University’s Kinder Institute for Urban Research received a $55 million grant from the Kinder Foundation to continue its research “for decades to come,” the university announced.

The Kinder Institute researches and analyzes trends across the greater Houston area, including topics like Houstonians’ attitudes on deportation, affordability, food insecurity and the economy.

The Kinder Foundation’s donation includes $50 million restricted for the institute’s endowment and another $5 million for research in the near future.

“This grant will preserve our research as a public good, and we are focused on the long term to address future societal issues and needs,” Ruth López Turley, director of the Kinder Institute, said in a news release.

This new grant to the institute follows a $50 million endowment in 2022 by the Kinder Foundation.

“Over the past 15 years, we’ve seen firsthand the strength of the institute’s leadership and impact of its work,” said Nancy Kinder, president and CEO of the Kinder Foundation. “By growing the endowment, the institute will have the stability and independence to advance meaningful solutions for generations to come.”

The Kinder Institute was founded in 2010 to research trends and ideas in Houston and other urban areas across the United States.
