The sophomore lefthander will take the ball against USC Upstate having allowed one earned run this season over the course of 18⅔ innings. He’s collected 25 strikeouts and given up just eight hits and five walks.

He’s also the only Texas arm to pitch into the seventh inning this season. And his team could use some length. For the first time this year, the Longhorns (14-0) find their bullpen a bit stretched. They used nine different pitchers as they scrambled to secure Saturday night’s 11-9 victory over the Spartans (7-9). Four of those came in the ninth inning, when USC Upstate came an extra-base hit shy of erasing an eight-run deficit.

The Spartans will send rigthy Max Bianchini to the mound to oppose Volantis. He was effective enough to earn an All-Big South honorable mention last season as a reliever, but has found the transition into the rotation tricky. He holds a 7.42 ERA through three starts against South Alabama, NJIT and Georgia Southern.

After Anthony Pack Jr. drove in a run with a double, Josh Livingston got his first big moment as a Longhorn. The Wichita State transfer drilled a breaking ball at the bottom of the zone out to right-center field for a grand slam, Texas’ second of the weekend. Livingstone had been hitting .125 coming into the day.

END 5: Texas 5, USC Upstate 3
The Spartans became the first team to get to Dylan Volantis this season, ambushing him for three runs in the top of the fifth, where Volantis walked a batter, gave up an infield single, then surrendered two softly struck knocks to right field. Michael Winter came out of the bullpen to collect the final out of the fifth inning.

Casey Borba launched his second home run of the weekend, a three-run shot to put the Longhorns up 5-0.

Dylan Volantis erased a ground-ball single by inducing his second double play of the game. The Longhorns went down in order in their half.

The Longhorns played some small ball in the second to plate two runs. Adrian Rodriguez singled, then stole second, before Temo Becerra reached on an error and swiped second base himself. Rodriguez scored on Anthony Pack Jr.’s groundout, then Casey Borba drove in Becerra with a sacrifice fly.
