SAN MARCOS, Texas (March 8, 2026) – Washington State put two runners on in the ninth inning but the rally was held off by the Texas State bullpen for a 4-3 Bobcat win at Bobcat Ballpark Sunday afternoon.
 
Washington State (6-9) leadoff hitter Trevor Smith reached base three times including a pair of RBI-singles but just missed a go-ahead grand slam after his seventh inning RBI-single hit halfway up the right field wall. Dane Chavez also reached base three times with a single, a pair of walks and two runs scored while Gavin Roy added a pair of singles and a walk.
 
Cougar pitching combined for 10 strikeouts but Texas State (12-3) used a second-inning two-run homer and runs in the fifth and sixth innings to clinch the series. WSU combined to leave nine runners on base.

Texas State took a 2-0 with an opposite-field two-run home run in the second inning.
 
The Cougars made it a one-run game in after Smith’s RBI-single to left field in the fifth inning but left the bases loaded to end the frame. Texas State answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning and later added another RBI-single in the sixth for a 4-1 advantage.
 
In the seventh, Alexandre Giguère led off with a line drove single to left, Chavez and Roy followed with bunt singles to load the bases. Smith nearly gave the Cougars the lead with a long drive to right field but it hit half way up the wall and was held to an RBI-single. One batter later, Max Hartman’s RBI-fielder’s choice groundout to shortstop made it a one-run game.
 
In the ninth, Smith and pinch-hitter Cam Macleod were both hit by pitches two outs but Hartman’s hard-hit groundball was snagged by the second baseman who fired to first for the final out.
