Gamecocks fall to Texas in SEC title game, 74-59

  • March 9, 2026

GREENVILLE, S.C. (WIS) – No. 4 Texas denied No. 3 South Carolina’s bid for a fourth-straight SEC title, defeating the Gamecocks 78-61 in Greenville on Sunday.

Texas primarily took advantage of 14 Gamecock turnovers and also had a strong scoring day with a 54% field goal percentage.

South Carolina was unable to overcome a sluggish start, with the Longhorns 14-0 run in the first four minutes of the game fueled by five

The Gamecocks got the lead down to as low as nine in the second quarter, but a 10-0 run from Texas midway through the period stretched the lead back out to double-digits before the break.

It marked South Carolina’s largest halftime deficit in an SEC tournament game since 2008.

Texas began pulling away again in the third quarter before a late 6-0 run by the Gamecocks cut the lead to 13 heading into the final period.

South Carolina was unable to get their deficit back to single digits, however, as Texas maintained its lead and made five of its last six field goals on its way to the win.

The victory is also Texas’s first conference tournament championship since winning the Big 12 in 2024, before their move to the SEC.

Joyce Edwards led the Gamecocks with 13 points, but tied for the most individual turnovers with five. Maddy McDaniel was the only other South Carolina player to score in double digits with 10 points.

Texas forward Madison Booker led the Longhorns with 18 points.
