Today’s Big Stories
1. Young mariachi brothers, their parents detained by ICE in Texas
Three young mariachi brothers who performed at a congressional event last year are in detainment as of last week, sparking outrage from the community and Texas elected officials, the San Antonio Express-News reported.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained the McAllen-based Gámez-Cuéllar brothers — Antonio (18), Caleb (14) and Joshua (12) — and their parents after “what relatives describe as a routine ICE appointment in Edinburg, Texas,” according to the Express-News.
2. Houston’s Hobby Airport experiences 3-hour TSA lines amid partial government shutdown
The partial government shutdown, which began in mid-February, is causing extensive Transportation Security Administration (TSA) lines at Houston’s William P. Hobby Airport.
On Sunday morning, the international airport made a post to X recommending that passengers arrive four to five hours early since security wait times could be more than two hours long.
3. A look at the private schools opting out of Texas’ voucher program
As of early March, the Texas comptroller has reported that more than 150,000 applications are in for Texas’ Education Freedom Accounts, the state’s new school voucher program.
The education savings accounts program sets aside $1 billion for families to send their children to private school or fund homeschooling using taxpayer dollars. The deadline to sign up is quickly approaching.
