The Cowboys plan on signing quarterback Sam Howell to a one-year contract, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Dallas Morning News Tuesday night.

Howell didn’t play during the 2025 regular season.

Last August, Howell was traded by Minnesota to Philadelphia for a 2026 fifth-round pick and a 2027 seventh-round selection.

The Vikings also sent a 2026 sixth-round pick to the Eagles.

Howell joins Dak Prescott, Joe Milton and Will Grier at the position.

When the 2025 season ended, Prescott and Milton were on the 53-man roster and Grier was on the practice squad. In February, Grier was signed to a futures contract.

Howell is a former 2022 fifth-round pick by the Washington Commanders. He’s played in 20 games with 18 starts, 17 coming in the 2023 season for Washington.

As a starter, Howell is 5-13.
