The refurbished Sex Pistols will make their long-awaited return to the Longhorn Ballroom on Sept. 11.

The show — the kickoff to the band’s first U.S. tour in more than two decades — was originally scheduled for last fall with new singer Frank Carter set to make his Dallas debut fronting the band. But that tour was scrapped after guitarist Steve Jones broke his wrist in a “freak accident” and required surgery.

The new date comes 48 years after the group’s infamous 1978 show at the Longhorn. The late Pistols bassist Sid Vicious performed part of the gig with a blood-spattered face, much to the delight of fans and onlookers who paid $3.50 to witness the punk rock spectacle.

“Most of the people who came to the Longhorn Ballroom came to see the people who came to see the Sex Pistols,” The Dallas Morning News reported the next day. “The band was pummeled with rotten tomatoes and other non-injurious missiles all the time they were on stage.” A recording of the concert was released last year as Live in the USA 1978 – Dallas.

The band broke up weeks after that show, but reformed in 1996 with Jones, singer-lyricist Johnny Rotten and drummer Paul Cook. Original bassist Glen Matlock replaced Vicious.

Cook and Matlock join Jones on the current tour. But Rotten wants nothing to do with it.

“They’re absolutely going to kill all that was good with the Pistols by eliminating the point and the purpose of it all,” he told England’s The i Paper last year. “I didn’t write those words lightly. They’re trying to … get away with karaoke.”
