SAN ANTONIO – An arson investigation is underway after a fire at the new ICE facility on Tuesday night.
According to the San Antonio Fire Department, crews were dispatched around 10 p.m. to the 500 block of Southeast Loop 410 after receiving a report of a possible trash fire.
When firefighters arrived, they found a small fire burning outside a commercial building at the location. The flames were quickly extinguished without incident.
No injuries were reported, and damage to the building was described as minor.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the department’s arson division.
This is a 640,000-square-foot warehouse off Loop 410 near East Houston Street, recently purchased by the federal government for $66 million.
Democratic U.S. House Representative Henry Cuellar says the warehouse will be used as a processing center.
“They’ll get processed there and then they would be sent somewhere else outside of San Antonio for a detention center,” Cuellar told members of the media in February.
Cuellar said DHS told him the facility will have 1,500 beds. Still, he raised concerns about the broader approach to immigration enforcement.

“They keep saying it’s the lowest number of crossings but they’re acting like there’s this danger out there right now,” said Cuellar.
