San Antonio’s Zachry Construction Corp. has acquired Plano-based Crescent Constructors Inc., a general contractor specializing in water and wastewater infrastructure projects. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

The deal adds more than 100 employees to Zachry’s workforce, which now employs more than 2,500 workers.

In a statement, Zachry said the acquisition expands its capabilities in the water infrastructure sector, which it described as one of the fastest-growing segments in the construction industry.

“Crescent brings the specialized expertise, talent, and project experience needed to immediately establish a stronger presence in this critical and fast-growing sector,” said Travis Mross, a Zachry executive vice president. “Water is the future of infrastructure. This acquisition ensures we are well positioned to lead in this space.”

Zachry is a heavy civil, roadway and infrastructure construction company for public and private customers. It’s been in business since 1924.

Among Zachry’s current projects, according to its website, are:

A $25 million project that’s replacing two aging spillway crest gates at the Wesley Seale dam for the city of Corpus Christi. The job also includes retrofitting 25 additional bays with the installation of a system to remove ground water.

A $149.2 million project that widens 5 miles of Interstate 10 on the East Side of San Antonio. Work also has consisted of widening the highway to three lanes in each direction and converting two-way frontage roads to one-way operations.

A $490 million job awarded to Zachry and other contractors by the Harris County Toll Road Authority to build the Houston Ship Channel bridge.

Crescent focuses exclusively on municipal and industrial water projects, including the design and construction of complex storage, reservoir, conveyance and treatment systems.

“Joining Zachry marks an important evolution for our company,” Crescent founder Mike Daigre said in the statement. “With the strength of Zachry’s national platform behind us, we are excited to grow our capabilities and continue delivering essential infrastructure.”

Crescent will operate under its name as a Zachry affiliate.

Zachry is unrelated to Zachry Group, a giant engineering and construction company based in San Antonio.

In 1924,  Henry Bartell “Pat” Zachry founded H.B. Zachry Co. His son, Bartell Zachry, later took the reins and built the company into an international force in the construction industry.

In 2008, the Zachry Co. reorganized into two separate entities, each led by Bartell Zachry’s sons.

David Zachry assumed ownership of Zachry Corp., which operates numerous companies, including Zachry Construction. His brother, John Zachry, took control of Zachry Group, which handles industrial projects in the power and petrochemical sectors, industrial engineering and maintenance.

Some of Zachry Group’s subsidiaries landed in bankruptcy last year following difficulties related to construction of the Golden Pass LNG export terminal just south of Port Arthur.
