The Dallas Cowboys are expected to bring back a familiar face in free agency.

A person familiar with the decision confirmed to The Dallas Morning News on Wednesday the team plans to reunite with defensive end Tyrus Wheat when the league year begins.

That distinction is important because Wheat is technically an Exclusive Rights Free Agent (ERFA) with the Detroit Lions, where he played last year. The Lions reportedly plan to not tender Wheat, making him an unrestricted free agent. The deadline for official tenders is the opening of the new year. Wheat would then be free to sign with the Cowboys freely if he’s not tendered.

Wheat spent the first two seasons of his career in Dallas, signing as an undrafted free agent in 2023, before playing in Detroit in 2025.

Wheat played in 15 games last season for the Lions and had 1.5 sacks. He has also spent much of his career as a contributor on special teams. That’s an area the Cowboys are looking to improve after last season.
