A San Patricio jury awarded Kristene Chapa $198M in a civil case tied to the 2012 Portland park attack that injured her and killed her girlfriend Mollie Olgin.
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A San Patricio County jury has awarded $198 million in damages to Kristene Chapa in a civil case connected to the 2012 attack at a Portland park that left her girlfriend dead and Chapa critically injured, according to Houston attorney Tony Buzbee.Â
Buzbee announced the verdict this week following several days of testimony in San Patricio County state court.
According to Buzbee, jurors deliberated for about two and a half hours before returning the verdict in the case Mary Kristene Chapa v. David M. Strickland, Larry Joe Strickland and Taft Pharmacy.
The case stems from the June 2012 attack at Violet Andrews Park in Portland, where Chapa and her girlfriend, Mollie Olgin, were assaulted and shot in the head.
The lawsuit sought damages connected to the attack and its lasting impact on Chapa, according to Buzbee.
Olgin died from her injuries. Chapa survived the shooting.
David M. Strickland was later convicted in 2016 of the crimes and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
San Patricio District Attorney Margie Silva told 3NEWS “Justice has been served, criminally and civilly!”Â
Buzbee said Strickland testified during the civil trial and was cross-examined as part of the proceedings.
In a statement posted after the verdict, Buzbee described Chapa as a survivor who has continued to advocate for other victims.
“Kristene Chapa and her girlfriend Mollie Olgin were kidnapped at the Violet Andrews Park in Portland, Texas on the night of June 22, 2012. The perpetrator made Kristene tape up Mollie’s face and eyes, and then her own face and eyes. He sodomized Kristene and then shot both Mollie and Kristene in the back of the head. Mollie died. Kristene miraculously lived. Despite all that has occurred, the perpetrator, David M. Strickland, has denied responsibility to what he did to Kristene.
This past several days, we tried Kristene’s civil case to verdict in San Patricio County state court. The case was vigorously defended by Michael Terry of Hartline Barger L.L.P. out of Corpus Christi. The jury heard several days of testimony, along with that of Strickland. I cross examined him. It didn’t go well, for him.
After two and a half hours of deliberation, the jury returned a verdict of $198,000,000.
The case is Mary Kristene Chapa versus David M. Strickland, Larry Joe Strickland, and Taft Pharmacy.
Kristene Chapa is a hero. A sexual assault survivor. God bless her.”
No word yet on why Taft Pharmacy was named in the lawsuit. 3NEWS has reached out to Buzbee. We will provide updates as more information becomes available.Â
