The suspect was detained by Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis while she was attending a community event at the library.

AUSTIN, Texas — A man is facing a felony charge following an alleged assault at the Austin Central Library on Wednesday.

According to the Austin Police Department (APD), officers responded to a call reporting a male stomping on another person’s head on the fourth floor of the library.

Officers arrived and learned that Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis – who had been at the library for a community meeting – had already detained the suspect, identified as 30-year-old Daniel Vasquez.

Officers located the victim, who was found unconscious on the floor with significant injuries. Life-saving measures were performed by officers before Austin-Travis County EMS (ATCEMS) arrived and transported them to a local hospital. They are reported to be in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

Investigators determined that Vasquez struck the victim in the head without being provoked while the victim was seated at a computer. The force of the punch caused the victim to fall to the floor unconscious. He then allegedly stomped on the victim’s head multiple times before returning to his computer.

Vasquez was taken to the Travis County Jail and is charged with Aggravated Assault with Serious Bodily Injury.
