LPFFA seeks donations for First Responders Memorial Loop signs along Loop 88

  • March 13, 2026

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The Lubbock Professional Firefighters Association is asking the community to help fund two memorial signs along Loop 88, honoring first responders who died in the line of duty.

Joseph Wallace, president of the LPFFA, said the project originated with City Manager Jarrett Atkinson before being sent for approval.

“We took it to Senator Perry and he latched onto it immediately,” Wallace said. “He wrote the bill, carried it, did all the leg work to figure out how every part of it would work and how we would implement it, and it passed.”

Funding the project

While the state approved the project, TxDOT cannot provide funding for memorial signs under state statute. Wallace said community members can donate any amount to help cover the $33,000 cost of design and installation.

“It’s personal to our Lubbock community,” Wallace said. “We are extremely fortunate to have the community of citizens we do. Lubbock always shows up for its first responders, so I think this goes hand in hand with each other.”

The road signs

The signs will read “First Responders Memorial Loop.” Wallace said the project is meant to keep the memory of fallen first responders alive for the broader community.

“That’s what I want them to remember — the sacrifice they are willing to make and constantly making,” Wallace said. “It takes a special person to do that, and that’s what I would like the citizens to continue to remember, and they do, that there’s always a group of people that are out there, while you’re sleeping, watching over you, and that’s a pretty special group of people.”
