Waco, TX (FOX 44) — The Humane Society of Central Texas says it is working directly with Brazos Valley Boarding Kennels to evaluate and help place 29 dogs currently at the facility.
Staff have started medical and behavioral assessments, and a veterinarian from Pet Circle Regional Animal Center has also evaluated the dogs and facility.
After receiving hateful comments on Facebook, Brazos Valley Boarding Kennels reached out to the Humane Society of Central Texas for help placing the dogs.
“We wanted to see for ourselves,” Humane Society of Central Texas Executive Director, Tom Lupfer said. “We know better than just to take what on Facebook at face value. I immediately offered some assistance as far as food. If any of the dogs needed medical assistance, we could provide that. And he said the medical is exaggerated. There’s not a medical problem, but he said, we’re always taking donations of food, and we would be happy to accept that.”
Officials say after visiting the facility, the dogs appeared to be in excellent physical condition, adding that no animal welfare concerns were identified.
“We looked at their general demeanor, their emotional stability,” Lupfer explained. “Were they aggressive? Were they friendly? Were they willing to come and be treat motivated, in other words? And our assessment was what we published, in which we saw no evidence of abuse. We saw no evidence of neglect. We saw no evidence of malnourishment. and the dogs seemed well-adjusted.”
The Humane Society says it’s now working to coordinate placements to reduce the number of dogs at the facility and help find long-term homes.
“While we were at the shelter, we were placing animals with rescues in-state and out of state,” Lupfer stated. “We’ve had a lot of success with this, put them in the markets where we’ve got one rescue. We did well in Illinois. They begin to advertise and promote the dogs before we even have them on the van driving that direction. And it’s not unusual for half, maybe more of them, to already be pre-adopted before we even show up with the van.”
The Humane Society says true animal welfare means actively helping animals in need.
“Participate, not be a key ward warrior on Facebook,” Lupfer emphasized. “The shelter needs volunteers. The shelter needs fosters. Humane Society needs fosters. If you really want to be part of the solution, dig in and help us. boots on the ground.”
The Humane Society adds that true animal welfare means actively helping animals in need and urges the community to support the dogs by donating.

placements are arranged.
