Record Warmth, Hard Freeze

  • March 13, 2026

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The South Plains is about to experience a significant rise, and then drop, in temperatures. The roller coaster will take us to record warmth this weekend, and then to one of our coldest nights in months. Here’s our day-by-day expectations.

Today, as you know, brought windy conditions once again to the KCBD/FOX34 viewing area. The good news is, of course, the winds dropped from windy to breezy as the sun dipped below the horizon. Some welcome relief from the wind tonight.

Friday is shaping up to be a mild day. Some might even say beautiful. We’re expecting much less wind and notably warmer temperatures. Pleasant conditions to get out and enjoy the outdoors.

Saturday takes the warmth to another level. We’re tracking conditions that are likely to result in a record high for the Lubbock area. It’s late Spring, but it will feel more like a Summer afternoon. If heat is your thing, consider Saturday to be another great day to be outside. Remember to stay hydrated and protect yourself from the sun if you will be spending extended time outdoors.

Sunday is when Mother Nature flips the switch. The change may seem dramatic. A cold front, which earlier in the week was anticipated late Sunday, is now expected by mid- to late morning in the Lubbock area. It will become very windy, with gusts likely greater than 50 miles per hour at times.

The strong winds will make it feel even colder than the actual temperature. Low visibility in blowing dust is possible. Secure any loose outdoor items which may become airborne.

The temperature will fall rapidly behind the front. Combined with the strong wind, wind chills will get uncomfortably low by Sunday afternoon and evening.

The real concern comes Sunday night into Monday morning when a hard freeze settles in. It may be the area’s coldest morning since the end of January. That cold will damage cold-sensitive vegetation.

A hard freeze is expected Sunday night across most if not all of the KCBD/FOX34 viewing area.A hard freeze is expected Sunday night across most if not all of the KCBD/FOX34 viewing area.(KCBD First Alert)

If you have plants, flowers, or landscaping that are sensitive to freezing temperatures, you’ll want to take steps to protect them before Sunday. Bring in potted plants, cover delicate vegetation, and consider draping frost cloth over anything you want to save.

These are significant weather changes. Stay with us for updates as we get closer to Sunday.

On This Date

On this date in 2007, afternoon thunderstorms produced locally heavy rainfall, capping a three day period that saw widespread two to five inch rainfall totals over the South Plains. Flash flooding was largely limited to urban areas. Some damage was reported. The greatest impacts were in Lubbock County where flooding of many city streets resulted in more than twenty stalled vehicles and up to $120,000 in damages. No injuries were reported.
