Today’s Big Stories

1. ‘Flying cars? About time!’ Texas among 8 states selected for air taxi pilot program

There’s Uber and Lyft, but many Texans will soon be able to add air taxis to their rideshare options, according to information released by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). Both agencies announced the FAA’s plans to launch a pilot program conducting test flights between Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio and Houston.

2. Texas cities talk about dealing with autonomous vehicles during emergency situations

As first responders were responding to a mass shooting on Austin’s West 6th Street on March 1, a bystander recorded a driverless vehicle blocking an ambulance heading to the scene.

Despite a police officer being able to move the Waymo vehicle, officials called the ambulance blockage another moment where autonomous vehicles (AVs) had not operated how they were supposed to.

As City of Austin officials communicate and work with Waymo, other cities in Texas are figuring out how they will handle similar situations.

3. As beach season begins, watch out for stinging sea slugs on the Texas coast

As beach season begins, tiny stinging sea slugs are washing up on Texas shores — but don’t be fooled by their size.

According to Harte Research Institute, the small creatures feed on the Portuguese man o’ war, and can store the man o’ war’s cells and concentrate them, allowing them to deliver a painful sting when touched.
