Texas A&M baseball held a lead over Oklahoma until the bottom of the eighth inning, but the Sooners‘ late sacrifice-fly sealed the deal, as the Aggies dropped Game 1, 8-7 in Norman on Friday night.

The Aggies entered the weekend ranked eighth in the nation and third in the league with a .344 batting average, but the Sooners brought an extremely talented pitching staff that boasts a 2.96 ERA through 17 games played so far.

In his return to the lineup, shortstop Chris Hacopian got the scoring going for Texas A&M with an RBI double. The Aggies plated three more runs in the first inning off Sooner errors in the first for a 4-0 early lead. Brendan Brock responded with an RBI triple to put Oklahoma on the board. That was followed by a sac-fly to cut the lead to 4-2.

Bear Harrison made the score 5-2 with an RBI single, but the Sooners charged back again and trailed just one run entering the fourth inning. Texas A&M’s Wesley Jordan knocked in two runs in his respective return to the lineup, but Brock’s two-run homer and a solo blast from Jaxon Willits tied the game, before Oklahoma scored the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth.

The result marks Texas A&M’s second loss of the season, as they look to bounce back and tie the series tomorrow evening. Right-hander Weston Moss is slated to get the start for the Aggies on Saturday, while LJ Mercurius is projected to open things on the bump for the Sooners.
