Temple Emanu-El Senior Rabbi David Stern reflected on this week’s attack on a Michigan synagogue during Shabbat service on Friday. “We are here shaken to the core,” he told the congregation.
An attacker with a rifle crashed his vehicle into the Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield Township in Michigan Thursday, the Associated Press reports. The attacker was fatally shot by security, AP reports, and everyone at the synagogue was OK. The incident has prompted synagogues to ramp up security.
“It’s always good to come together for Shabbat, but this Shabbat, it feels especially so. We’re here not much more than 24 hours after the attack on West Bloomfield. We’re here grateful that members of the community are safe, and we’re here shaken to the core,” Stern said.
Stern also reflected on the importance of community.
“On nights like this, it’s really good to have each other,” he said. “It’s really good to have the community that surrounds us in strength and in love.”
Temple Emanu-El in the 8500 block of Hillcrest Road in Preston Hollow is among the largest synagogues in the South and Southwest.
