Música Mexicana took center stage at ACL Live at the Moody Theater on Friday night for Rolling Stone’s Future of Music showcase at South by Southwest. The venue reached capacity as fans gathered outside before the show-stopping headliners, regional Mexican band Fuerza Regida, took the stage.

Formed in California in 2015, Fuerza Regida’s fame rose quickly with their infectious anthems y corridos. The band gained popularity among Mexican American youth, and their influence spread nationwide and internationally.

“We just want to have a good time,” said Deysi Lopez, who traveled from Houston for the concert. “I just had a baby three years ago, and this is the first concert I’ve been to since.”

At a festival long dominated by indie rock and emerging pop acts, the booming sounds of regional Mexican music are claiming their place in the heart of downtown Austin.
