FORT WORTH, Texas – North Carolina A&T is in first place after the first 32 games of the Intercollegiate Team Championships, Fort Worth, Texas Sectional sponsored by the United States Bowling Congress (USBC).
The Aggies, the 12th-ranked team in the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) Top 25 poll, have the top pinfall at the Fort Worth Sectional held at City View Lanes, finishing ahead of 15th-ranked Newman University on Saturday. The top four teams out of the four sectionals will head to Green Bay, Wis., April 13-18, to play for an ITC national championship at Ashwaubenon Bowling Alley. The Aggies, the top qualifiers out of the Allen Park, Mich., Sectional last season, bowled a 6,504 total pinfall to average 203.25 on the day. Newman trails the Aggies by 239 pins, posting a 6,265 total pinfall on its first day.
The 15 teams assembled at Cityview Lanes will play another 32 games on Sunday to determine the championship field. Fifth-ranked Louisiana Tech is in third place with a total pinfall of 6,178. Seventeenth-ranked Tulane is in fourth with a 6,064 total pinfall, and the University of Northwestern Ohio rounds out the top five with a total pinfall of 5,929. Oklahoma Christian also remains in contention after a total pinfall of 5,901.
Twenty of A&T’s 32 games on Saturday went over the 200 total pinfall plateau. They exceeded the 225 mark seven times. Their best game of the day came in Game 23 when they bowled a 268. They held the lead over the first 16 games with a total pinfall of 3,141. The only other two teams to exceed 3,000 total pins after the first 16 games were Newman (3,078) and Northwestern Ohio (3,036).
Teams started to heat up over the next 16 games on Saturday. Fortunately, that included A&T. The Aggies had the highest total pinfall over the final 16 games on Saturday, posting a 3,363 pinfall over the second block of games. La Tech had the next highest total in the second block, posting a 3,211 total pinfall. Newman remained in contention by totaling 3,187 pins. Northwestern Ohio stood as the only other team to surpass a 3,000 total pinfall in the second block, posting a 3,133.
The other sectional leaders after Saturday include 13th-ranked McKendree (6,314) out of Pittsburgh, top-ranked Jacksonville State (7,061) out of Smyrna, Tenn., and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (6,369) out of Addison, Ill.
