LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Major swings in temperatures and extreme wind gusts are anticipated heading into Sunday with a hard freeze expected Sunday night/Monday morning.

First Alert Weather DayFirst Alert Weather Day(Dylan Smith)

TONIGHT

A mild and breezy night is ahead. Overnight lows will remain in the 50s for most as winds stay in the 10 to 20 mph range.

SUNDAY

Don’t expect this to be a run-of-the-mill day if you’re planning on heading outside. Temperatures start mild in the 50s with most of us reaching into the low to mid 60s through the morning. A cold front is expected to arrive mid-day, possibly late-morning. The earlier it arrives the cooler our high temperatures will be, most of which will occur before noon. Naturally, because of where the front is coming from, our northern counties will experience the coolest highs and the effects of the front earlier than the southern areas.

After that front arrives, winds are going to ramp up with gusts expected to reach anywhere from 50 to 60 mph at their peak. Sustained winds will likely range from 30 to 45 mph for much of the South Plains.

This cold front will also usher in very dry and cool air, which when paired with the winds and general outdoor conditions makes for a dangerous fire weather day, with both high wind warnings and red flag (fire weather) warnings issued for the daytime hours Sunday.

SUNDAY NIGHT

As we move into the overnight hours winds will begin to slow, becoming fairly calm by Monday morning. This will allow low temperatures to plummet into the upper teens to mid 20s.

UPCOMING WEATHER PATTERN

Monday will start the week out on a chilly note topping out only around 50 degrees. However, a high pressure system moves in from the west, helping temperatures to soar by 20 degrees heading into Tuesday and setting the stage for what’s looking like several chance of breaking records highs late next week and into next weekend as we’re already forecasting low to mid 90s next Thursday through Saturday.
