Saturday’s pro boxing card at the El Paso County Coliseum featured knockdowns, close fights and a fighter quitting before the first bell.

Jorge Tovar vs. Henriques Lando, middleweights

In the main event fight of the night, El Paso middleweight Jorge Tovar improved to 14-0 with 10 KOs with a sixth round stoppage of Henriques Lando, of South Africa, in an entertaining fight. Tovar was the busier fighter and landed several hard rights, but Lando’s strong jaw held up and he was effective at times with good combinations.

Jason Sanchez vs. Yeyery Castillo, featherweights

In the co-main event, Albuquerque featherweight Jason Sanchez looked good in a third-round stoppage of Yeyery Castillo, of La Romana, Dominican Republic. Castillo was down twice before referee Rocky Burke stopped the fight at 1:14 of the third round. Castillo suffered just his second loss in 16 fights. Sanchez is now 18-6 with 10 knockouts.

Nayeli Rodriguez vs. Maryguenn Vellinga, featherweights

El Paso flyweight Nayeli Rodriguez won an entertaining eight-round fight vs. Maryguenn Vellinga, of Park City, Utah, via split decision. Rodriguez won 78-74 and 79-73 on two cards and Vellinga won 76-74 on the other card. Rodriguez improved to 7-1-1 in her career. Both fighters fought well and had several good exchanges and all eight rounds were closely contested.

Ivy Enriquez vs. Crystal Hoy, bantamweights

El Paso’s Ivy Enriquez stayed perfect with a second round TKO over veteran Crystal Hoy of Las Vegas. Enriquez is starting to develop more power in her young career and landed several hard punches and is now 6-0.

Pedro Rodarte vs. Kennario Davidson, junior lightweights

El Paso junior lightweight Pedro Rodarte improved to 2-0 after winning a four-round unanimous decision over Kennario Davidson of Montgomery, Alabama. Rodarte showed good boxing skills against Davidson and varied his attack effectively with good body work and hard shots to the head and face.

Ariana Carrasco vs. Tennielle Young, super welterweight

Las Cruces junior middleweight Ariana Carrasco, who was a successful amateur boxer with several national titles, expected a big performance in her debut. However, her opponent and fellow debuter Tennielle Young, of Columbus, Ohio, left the ring after the introduction of fighters to the surprise of everyone. Carrasco won by forfeit.

D’Angelo Sanchez vs. Austin Lewis, super flyweights

Las Cruces’ D’Angelo Sanchez defeated Austin Lewis, of Albuquerque, by unanimous decision, winning 40-35 on all three scorecards. Lewis was game, but Sanchez was the more skillful fighter and floored Lewis once in the four-round fight. Sanchez is now 5-1.
