Kirkwood drove off into the sunset but a late caution after Christian Rasmussen stalled bunched the leaders a final time to deliver a one lap shootout for the win.
But the Texas shootout did not get very far before Romain Grosjean and Nolan Siegel crashed to bring the field back under yellow to the checkered.
Palou finished second while Will Power earned his first podium finish at Andretti Global in third. Both tied the winner for a race-high 16 laps led.
Each of the sessions prior to the race felt chaotic and carnage-filled, the field calmed down for the main event.
Fresh off his first career pole, Marcus Ericsson led the opening 15 laps before a slow pitstop surrendered his lead.
He would not bounce back from that mistake but still finished inside the top five in fourth for a team 1-3-4 which told the whole paddock that the street courses run through Andretti.
Pato O’Ward rounded out the top five as the highest placed Chevrolet in the final order. His teammate, Christian Lundgaard, recovered well from an lazy spin early in the race and recovered to finish seventh.
David Malukas was the highest finishing Team Penske entry in sixth. He and teammate Josef Newgarden made contact after the blind pit exit which resulted in a Newgarden spin. The former championship leader finished 15th.
Scott Dixon, Alexander Rossi, and Marcus Armstrong finished out the top ten. They all earned their second top tens of the season.
Other notable finishes include Scott McLaughlin in 11th after his qualifying crash that saw him start last in the event. Rookie Caio Collet flashed some street course prowess this weekend and finished a career-best 12th.
Felix Rosenqvist led seven laps before INDYCAR officials ruled he jumped the final restart and relegated him to the final car on the led lap in 21st.
