CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – A community is mourning the death of a Veterans Memorial High School teacher and coach who was killed in a two-car crash Friday afternoon.

On Saturday, the Corpus Christi Independent School District announced that Leyton Hernandez, 28, died following the crash while he was traveling outside the Coastal Bend, according to the district.

CCISD said Superintendent Dr. Roland Hernandez, his wife, Dr. Cynthia Hernandez, and their daughter, Lauren Stinson, are mourning the loss of their son and brother.

Our hearts and thoughts are with Superintendent Roland Hernandez, his family, and all who are grieving the loss of Leyton Hernandez,” said the district in a post on Facebook. “Moments like these remind us of the profound connections within our school communities and the immense value of the people in them.

Leyton Hernandez was in his fifth year as a teacher and multi-sport coach at Veterans Memorial High School. He was a King High School graduate and earned his bachelor’s degree in 2020 from Texas State University, where he was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.

The district said Hernandez was “an accomplished high school athlete and college football recruit,” and that he and his father shared “a nine-year tradition of attending the state football championship game.”

CCISD said its crisis counseling team will be available to students and staff when schools reopen on Monday.

“Our prayers are with the Hernandez family. Please join us in supporting the family, Veterans Memorial High School, and our district,” CCISD said.

Other school districts have offered their support to the CCISD community, with Uvalde ISD taking to Facebook to offer their condolences.

Our hearts and thoughts are with Superintendent Roland Hernandez, his family, and all who are grieving the loss of Leyton Hernandez,” said Uvalde CISD in a statement. “Moments like these remind us of the profound connections within our school communities and the immense value of the people in them.

The district said the Hernandez family “appreciates the outpouring of condolences and warm memories” and thanked the community for respecting their privacy. Funeral arrangements are pending.
