El Paso’s first annual Oscar-inspired celebration for dogs brought together local pet lovers, nonprofits, vendors, and, of course, some incredibly well-dressed pups for an evening that was equal parts heartwarming and hilarious. Think Hollywood glamour, but make it fur.
I’ve covered a lot of local events, but nothing quite prepared me for the Pawscars, and I mean that in the best way possible.
What Is the Pawscars? El Paso’s First Dog Awards Event
The Pawscars was no small production. Dogs were recognized across multiple categories, including best stunts, best performance, and the one I had a front-row seat to, best dressed. Local pups strutted their stuff down an actual red carpet while their owners cheered them on, and the competition was fierce. We’re talking coordinated outfits, accessories, the works. As a guest judge for the best dressed category, I had what sounds like a dream job and is actually a surprisingly difficult one. How do you choose between a dog in a rhinestone-studded tuxedo and one in a perfectly tailored gown? I’ll just say every single contestant deserved a trophy.
Things to Do at the Pawscars Beyond the Red Carpet
What made the Pawscars truly special was everything happening beyond the red carpet. Local pet-based vendors filled the space, and a pet painter was on-site capturing furry portraits in real time. While some dogs were busy being glamorized, others were getting something even more valuable. Local dog owners took advantage of the opportunity to get their pets microchipped and vaccinated on the spot. Style and safety, a combination I can get behind.
El Paso Dog Rescue Organizations That Showed Up
Three incredible local rescue organizations showed up and showed out. Lunas Fosters, Rescue Re Shot Project, and Huckleberry Hound Rescue all had a presence at the event, bringing awareness to the dogs in our community who are still waiting for their forever homes. Their work is the backbone of events like this, and seeing them celebrated alongside the glitz of the evening felt exactly right.
And speaking of forever homes, one very lucky dog was adopted at the event and got to walk the red carpet with their new family. If there’s a more perfect Pawscars moment than that, I haven’t seen it.
Capture That Pooch Pet Photography Supports El Paso Dog Rescue
None of this would have been possible without the vision and heart behind it, and a huge part of that heart belongs to Capture That Pooch Pet Photography. Their passion for the dog rescue community goes far beyond taking beautiful photos. They pour themselves into uplifting the organizations and animals that need it most. Events like the Pawscars exist because people like them refuse to stop showing up for local rescue.
Why El Paso Needs the Pawscars to Return Next Year
The Pawscars was a reminder of just how much love exists in this community for our four-legged neighbors. It was joyful, it was silly, it was meaningful, and it absolutely needs to come back next year. There are plenty more local pups who deserve their moment in the spotlight, and honestly, I’d judge the best dressed category again in a heartbeat.
